SNIST launches CubeSat using a stratospheric balloon
Students of Sreenidhi Institute of Science and Technology(SNIST), Hyderabad, launched a CubeSat named SREESAT-1 from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) balloon facility campus, Hyderabad on the 1st of August 2019.The entire SREESAT -1 costing around Rs. 25000 was designed and manufactured by a team of 25 students as part of their summer internship program. The zero pressure balloon carrying SREESAT-1 as a piggyback payload was launched at about 0235hrs(IST). The balloon reached its ceiling altitude of 18km, floated for about 50 minutes and the flight was terminated once the mission was completed.
The SREESAT-1 weighing about 400g has sensors to measure atmospheric parameters like the pressure, temperature, humidity, radiation in the ultraviolet and infraredregion. It also has a GPS that gives location and time and the capability to record four hours of data onboard. The experiment is aimed at studying the atmospheric effects on earth’s environment.
